Kurinuki Workshop
Kurinuki Workshops – Japanese Ceramic Sculpture
Discover kurinuki—a traditional Japanese technique where sculpture meets functionality. During this workshop, you'll create unique vessels, hand-sculpted from a solid block of clay. Each form is revealed by carefully trimming away excess material—no molds, no castings—just you, the clay, and your intuition.
What will you do during class?
– You will create your own tea cups ( chawan ), mugs ( yunomi ), as well as platters, bowls and plates
– You will use different types of stoneware clays in natural colors
– You will learn to combine clays in a marble-like technique
– You will discover the aesthetics of wabi-sabi – the beauty of imperfections, rawness and organic shapes
What are the classes like?
The workshop begins with a brief theoretical introduction to the kurinuki technique, the properties of clay, the drying and firing processes. Then we move on to the practical side: shaping the vessels by hand using basic carving tools.
