Kurinuki Workshop - Japanese Sculpture of Functional Ceramics
Discover kurinuki - a traditional Japanese technique where sculpture meets functionality. During the workshop, you will create unique vessels, hand-carved from a solid block of clay. Each form is revealed by carefully cutting away excess material - no molds, no casts - just you, clay, and intuition.
What will you do during the class?
- You can create your own tea bowls (chawan), cups (yunomi), or even platters, small bowls, and plates
- You will use various types of stoneware clays in natural colors
- You can combine clays to create a marble-like composition
- You will be inspired by the aesthetic of wabi-sabi - the beauty of imperfection, rawness, and organic shapes
What do the classes look like?
The workshop begins with a short introduction and a demonstration by the instructor: you will see how to work with a block of clay, how to choose the right moment for cutting, and what to pay attention to during drying and subsequent firing. Then, we move on to independently shaping vessels by hand using basic sculpting tools. The instructor is with the group throughout the entire session and helps at every stage of creating your own work.
What does the price include?
- 2.5 hours of workshop
- Glazing by the Alike team and firing up to 3 pieces at 1210°C - the pieces will then be fully functional
- Clays and all necessary materials
- Coffee, tea, and a good atmosphere
Who is it for?
The workshops are ideal for both beginners and experienced individuals. You don't need to have prior experience with clay - we provide full instructor support.
Welcome - the kurinuki technique is captivating and delightful!
