Ready-to-use crystalline glaze, which, when fired correctly, creates spectacular, unique crystals on the surface of ceramics.

Crystalline glazes are considered one of the most demanding ceramic glazing techniques. Achieving the desired results often requires many attempts, a suitable recipe, and a precisely selected firing curve. KJ Tools & Glazes were created to simplify this process. They are ready to use and applied similarly to standard glazes available on the market.

Application method

Before use, the glaze should be mixed thoroughly. The manufacturer recommends applying the glaze in three layers:

1. First layer: apply the glaze to the entire glazed surface of the vessel.
2. Second layer: start applying approximately at 1/3 height of the vessel, counting from its base.
3. Third layer: start applying approximately at 2/3 height of the vessel, counting from the base.

Each subsequent brush stroke should overlap the previous one by approximately 50%. This allows for an even layer of glaze.

Do not apply the glaze too thickly or too thinly. Too much glaze can hinder or completely inhibit crystal formation. A too-thin layer, on the other hand, can result in poor background coverage and limit the final effect.

Warning – glaze runs significantly

Crystalline glazes are very fluid during firing. Each piece must be fired on a suitably prepared glaze catcher or a stand protecting the kiln shelf.

Do not place the glazed piece directly on the shelf. The running glaze can permanently bond the piece to the shelf and damage kiln equipment.

Firing program in a kiln with controlled cooling

1. Heat to 1267°C.
2. Cool to 1150°C and hold for 45 minutes.
3. Cool to 1100°C and hold for 30 minutes.
4. Cool to 1050°C and hold for 20 minutes.
5. Cool to 1000°C and hold for 20 minutes.
6. Cool to 960°C and hold for 20 minutes.
7. After the program finishes, allow the kiln to cool naturally.

Kilns without controlled cooling function

After reaching 1267°C, allow the kiln to naturally cool to approximately 1150°C. Then, set the minimum power and maintain the temperature for 45 minutes. Repeat the process at subsequent temperatures, according to the times provided in the firing program.

Manually controlled kilns

After reaching 1267°C, the manufacturer recommends allowing the kiln to cool naturally for about 30 minutes. Then, set low power and maintain the temperature at approximately 1150°C for 45 minutes. Between each stage, allow the kiln to cool for about 30 minutes, then perform subsequent holds according to the program.

Important information

The final appearance of the glaze, the size of the crystals, and their distribution may vary depending on the ceramic body used, layer thickness, the placement of the piece in the kiln, and the actual temperature profile.

Before applying the glaze to a finished piece, we recommend testing it on a selected ceramic body. Each kiln and thermocouple may operate slightly differently, so the program may need to be adjusted to the specific conditions of a given studio.
