Witgert 16 SF Red clay – red, fine-grained stoneware clay

Witgert 16 SF Red is a plastic, fine-grained stoneware clay that fires to a red or dark red colour. It contains 25% red grog with a grain size of 0–0.2 mm, which enhances the natural colour of the body while maintaining a surface suitable for throwing on the wheel.

Characteristics:

• Fired colour: red to dark red
• Application: throwing and hand-building
• Form: plastic clay, 10 kg packages
• Firing temperature range: 1000–1230°C
• Grog content: 25% red grog, grain size 0–0.2 mm
• Drying shrinkage: approx. 7.5%
• Firing shrinkage: 3.4% at 1000°C; 4.7% at 1100°C; 5.6% at 1200°C
• Water absorption after firing: 8.0% at 1000°C; 5.3% at 1100°C; 3.5% at 1200°C

A versatile clay for mugs, bowls, plates, vases, pots and small sculptural forms. The red body can be a decoration in itself, and it also looks good in combination with white, cream, transparent and contrasting glazes. The intense red body works well as a standalone colour accent, especially in minimalist pieces without full glazing.

The given parameters are approximate. The final colour, shrinkage, absorbency, and glaze behaviour depend on the kiln, atmosphere, soaking time, and firing curve. Before making a larger series, we recommend a technological test with the selected clay and glaze.
