Goerg & Schneider 254 Clay – light, fine grogged stoneware body

Goerg & Schneider 254 is a versatile, light stoneware body with 25% very fine grog. The 0–0.2 mm grain size improves stability during throwing and modelling, yet allows for a smooth surface suitable for functional ware. After firing, the body has a white to light cream color.

Characteristics:

• Firing temperature range: 1000–1280°C
• Grog content: 25% grog, 0–0.2 mm grain
• Drying shrinkage: approx. 7%
• Firing shrinkage: 5% at 1070°C; 6% at 1140°C; 7% at 1240°C
• Water absorption after firing: 9% at 1070°C; 6% at 1140°C; 1% at 1240°C

Recommended for mugs, bowls, plates, vases, slab forms, and smaller sculptures. It's a practical choice for those who need a body more stable than smooth clay without grog, yet still comfortable to work with on the wheel. It's one of the most frequently recommended "beginner" bodies in schools and ceramic studios—easy to throw and predictable in firing.

The given parameters are approximate. The final color, shrinkage, absorbency, and glaze behavior depend on the kiln, atmosphere, soaking time, and firing curve. Before producing a larger series, we recommend conducting a technological test with the chosen body and glaze.
